Me? The Pharisee?

The Pharisee.

In Christian circles these guys have a less than stellar reputation.

Honestly, I sometimes wonder if we're a little hard on them. That's not to say they didn't miss the boat, but recently as I read over Matthew 23 I was really struck.

Woe to ME, for I've been the Pharisee.

The Pharisees had all the right answers, but the wrong attitude.

They followed all the rules, but had not righteousness.

They had all the proper adornment, but no properly placed adoration.

They went to all the right places, but missed the point.

They had all the right words, but without right worship.

They gave from their coffers, yet neglected their character.

They rid themselves of visible grime, yet clung to invisible greed.

They projected life, wellness, and wealth, yet their hearts were lifeless, wicked, and withered.

They pretended to serve, yet were actually self-serving.

They claimed knowledge of truth, yet condemned and crucified the Truth.

Woe to me, have I been the Pharisee? Have we been the Pharisee?
