Part 2: Who's Holding Your Hand?
Last time we ended with a question. When life comes to a screeching halt, who's riding in the car with you grasping tightly to your hand? Who are the people throwing their arms across your seat to attempt to shield you from harm. Who is in the backseat praying over you and speaking truth into your chaotic heart?
This reminds me of the story in Exodus 17. This past fall I came back to this encounter over and over again. It spoke deeply to my heart. The Israelite people are fighting a battle. As long as Moses' arms remained outstretched to the Lord victory is upon them. But Moses, this great leader, became fatigued and when his arms fell down, defeat was upon them. His brother and his friend (Aaron and Hur) saw this. They were paying attention. They sat him upon a rock and each supported an arm.
Who are your Aaron and Hurs? Who's holding your arms when you're battle weary and just can't seem to go on? When you're overcome by sorrow, shock, anger, or disappointment. Who's reminding you to sit and rest upon the ROCK of Ages when you're fatigued from all that is heartbreaking and frightening?
It matters, my friend. Oh, how it matters. The Christian life isn't meant to be lived in isolation. There is protection found in the love and fellowship of believers. In the midst of shock and suffering we sometimes rely on the faith of those around us until we can regain our bearings. They hold on when we cannot.
I've been there. Many of you have probably been there too.
When it felt like our world was being turned upside down I truly saw the Aarons and Hurs in our lives. People loved on us, prayed for us, jumped in to help us with childcare, sent cards, and so much more. These are also the ones who reminded me of the ROCK upon which I could rest. They gently grabbed my hands and pointed me to the One that cares and carries. They ministered to our hearts and to our family so sweetly.
In turn, I pray the Lord opens my eyes, all our eyes, to recognize when people are weary so we can lend support. We can be the one to gently grasp their hand and lead them to the ROCK upon which they can rest. Whose arms can we support?
REFLECTION:
1. Who are the Aaron and Hurs in your life? Let's take a moment and thank God for those people. If you're not sure who they are or even IF they are, then let's take a moment to ask God to show us and provide for us here.
2. To whom can you be an Aaron or a Hur? What are some practical ways you can support them and love them through their battle?
